The Montgomery Economic Development Corporation, Committee of 100 and Chamber of Commerce work with the county and town governments to assistlocal business and industry and to recruit new business to the county. Traditionally, the county’s economy has been dependent upon textiles and lumber. With the decline of textiles the emphasis is now on helping existing industries find niche markets and diversifying the industrial base. County commissioners adopted an incentive plan for new and expanded business in 1996 that is based on jobs and investment. The Committee of 100, also formed in 1996 has built and sold two industrial shell buildings bringing new jobs and investment to the county. The EDC, working with the towns and electric companies has NC Certified Industrial Sites located in Troy and Mount Gilead.
The Montgomery County School System serves more than 4,500
