Education:
Robeson County is proud to be the home of the historic Croatan Indian Normal School (now know as UNC-P University of North Carolina at Pembroke) which was established in March of 1887 by the General Assembly of North Carolina.  UNC-P, one of the 16 schools in the University of North Carolina’s system is a master’s level degree-granting university with an enrollment of 5,632 and offers 55 bachelors and 16 master’s degrees. 

  • Robeson Community College established in 1965 as a technical institute, now houses over $2 million in equipment and supports 21 curriculum programs, along with a variety of continuing education programs. It also is the home of a state-of-the-art Emergency Services Training Center, supporting the disciplines of law enforcement, rescue, and firefighting.
  • The Public Schools of Robeson County, a county wide public school system with some 24,000 students and 41 schools is one of the largest school systems in North Carolina.  Its collaboration and partnerships with both UNC-P and RCC provide an excellent environment for learning.
  • Numerous private schools,  are available for those seeking an alternative to the public school system
  • Planetarium– A unique resource for all county residents and visitors.

Economy:

  • Robeson County has approximately 85 employers in the metal, textile, clothing, food, electronics, and manufactured housing industries, and service centers.
  • Access - LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION makes Robeson County an ideal destination point for manufacturing and warehouse distribution for transporting goodsthroughout the U.S. and Canada.
  • Interstates I-95 and I-74 intersect in Robeson County.
  • Six certified industrial parks are located along the Interstate corridor.
  • CSX Railroad main east connection intersects in Robeson County.
  • Lumberton Regional Airport is located in the county and offers 5,510 ft. runways.
  • Close proximity to Wilmington Port which is a deep water international port.
  • Southeastern Regional Medical Center with its state-of-the-art Heart Center which is managed by the Duke University Health System provides great employment opportunities for those looking for employment in the field of medicine.
  • Both the state and local government provide a wide variety of job opportunities.
  • The county is also home to the Carolina Commerce and Technology Center, INC (COMTech). COMtech is a non-profit, tax exempt 501(C)(3) corporation founded in July 2000 and began opperations in January 2001. It is responible for developing an education and training center surrounded by 620 acres zoned for business and industry. The site in central Robeson County will be the home of technology-focused business, industry, education, training and business incubation facilities. The focus of COMtech is capacity building and development of a premier capability to support meaningful, long-term workforce development. COMtech directly impacts the growth of our economy and improvement in the quality of life for the people in our region. Its primary impact is regional job creation. COMtech is also home to the following education systems: UNC-Pembroke's Regional Center Economic, Community, and Professional Development Center and the UNC-P Biotechnology Research and Training Center. COMtech is also home to a satellite campus of Robeson Community College.

Culture:

  • Robeson County while providing the “feel” of a small rural community is rich in culture. 
  • The Carolina Civic Center which is listed on the North Carolina’s historic register of old buildings provides the stage for local cultural events.
  • Givens Performing Arts Center -- The 1,600 plus seat Paul R. Givens Performing Arts Center (GPAC) is the finest stage in southeastern North Carolina. This center is home to three professional performing arts series and numerous other events including appearances of numerous performers, Broadway acts and guest speakers.
  • Robeson Little Theater– offers local county residents the opportunity to utilize their skills in the production of musicals and dramas.
  • "Strike at the Wind"– The “Strike at the Wind!” [outdoor drama] is a riveting, gut-wrenching story of a renegade, a crusader, a husband and a son, who sought justice for his people – the Indians along the Lumber River – in Scuffletown.   Amid scheming politicians, fearless posse’s, deceitful friends and personal strife, Henry Berry Lowrie fought for justice. It was often as fickled as wind – thus the name, “Strike at the Wind!” 
  • Indian Cultural Center– Coordinates activities for the Lumbee Indian Tribe and operates a museum of local Native American arts and crafts
  • Old Main Museum and Cultural/Resource Center– Located on the campus of UNC-P contains exhibits of authentic Indian artifacts, arts and crafts from all over North America, with special emphasis on the Robeson County Indians with a particular focus being placed on the largest North Carolina tribe, the Lumbee.
  • Lumbee Indian Pow-Wow– a cultural meeting of the Lumbee Indian nation which is held several times each year.
  • Robeson Planetarium/Science and Technology Center– exposes childen of all ages to the wonders of the nighttime sky and the possibilities and relevance of science and technology to their everyday lives.
  • Annual Fairmont Farmers Festival highlights the historical significance and impact agriculture has had on the county.
